Arsenal FC 2022/23- All you need to know

Arsenal

Known as the Gunners, Arsenal has been an ever-present fixture of the English Premier League since the competition’s inauguration in 1992. Initially, Arsenal was known as the Woolwich Gunners and they flitted between potential stadiums before making Highbury their permanent home in 1913. Arsenal has a rich history and one that has been marked by success. This dates to the pre-eminent Herbert Chapman who made Arsenal a force to be reckoned with in the 1920s, while the Arsene Wenger years were also littered with success.

So, let’s scratch beneath the surface and share what we know about Arsenal. This will include squad details, an overview of their stadium, as well as discussing their prospects for the forthcoming campaign.

Arsenal’s Stadium – An Overview

After spending 93 years at Highbury, Arsenal closed a chapter on its illustrious in 2006 by moving to a new state-of-the-art stadium just a stone’s throw away – the Emirates. Highbury was Arsenal’s spiritual home and their final game was marked by a 4-2 victory over Wigan which saw them pip north London rivals Tottenham to a coveted Champions League spot.

While the hallmarks of Highbury were the seemingly tight confines of the pitch, the Emirates in contrast is a behemoth. This 60,000 all-seater stadium was designed to elevate the Gunners to a new level, and it is arguably one of the best stadiums in the English Premier League.

Arsenal By the Numbers

Arsenal has left an indelible mark on the history of the EPL and here are some crunch numbers over the past 30 years:

  • 2,017 – The number of goals racked up by Arsenal in the EPL
  • 619 – Wins amassed in the EPL
  • 249 – Times they have lost
  • 102 – Red cards and that was largely during Arsene Wenger’s tenure
  • 436 – Clean sheets kept in the EPL

How did Arsenal fare last season?

By all accounts, it was a disappointing end last season for the Gunners. With just a few games to go, they appeared to be in the driving seat for a top-four finish. However, defeats to Newcastle and Tottenham put pay to those hopes and Arsenal had to settle for fifth, and with it, a Europa League berth.

What can we expect this season?

Mikel Arteta’s men had a tepid start to last season with three defeats on the trot to Brentford, Chelsea, and Manchester City, so they will need to get out of the gate quicker this time against Crystal Palace. One of Arsenal’s main shortcomings was not replacing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last season when he joined Barcelona. However, they have strengthened in that department with the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, and he has looked sharp during pre-season.

The burden of expectation will be placed on Jesus to contribute at least 20 goals, and while a title challenge may not seem a realistic prospect, getting back into the top four should be the minimum remit as well as delivering a trophy, perhaps the Europa League or FA Cup.
